If you suffer from cold sores often, you can take Valtrex daily (Zovirax, Acyclovir) as a preventative medication. Half a pill is probably enough. I only use it when I'm really stressed out and playing many hours more than normal. If you wait until you feel the tingling coming on before you go to the doctor it will be too late.
Over 80% of the population has the virus which causes cold sores, but most people don't get cold sores. It is probably the extra stress of brass playing that brings on an attack. Like the other poster, I have noticed that a change in practice habits can sometimes case a cold sore to appear. Usually after taking a day or two off, then hitting it really hard. Ouch!
