When I went to Dillon Music, the very capable and helpful Matt Walters played a passage on every one of the tubas on my "short list" while I stood at the other end of the room. The tone of each one was substantially different 25 feet away than it was with it sitting in my lap.
I picked the two that sounded the best to me and ultimately picked the one that fit me the best ergonomically.
