My son is studying bass as well. His teacher advised against buying a bass until going to college. Right now he's playing a 1/8 size (he's 9) and next year he'll use a 1/4 size. Does his instructor recommend buying an instrument at your son's age?
If it is time, the Woodwind and Brasswind also sells stringed instruments. AS to forums for bass chat, the sites already mentioned can be useful.
