Yes the 983 thumb ring was not good for me either. I think Mr. Sheridan is a very large man and maybe it was designed to fit him.
I recently had the chance to play my teachers new MW2165 and that horn very very nice and comfortable but it had the worst thumb ring position of any tuba I have tried. That is the only thing I would change about that horn.
