Bands will rise or fall in their ability level with the ability level of the conductor. When I was in a DC band, the level of the group grew by leaps and bounds when we had a great musician leading us. Having said this, I prefer the Dallas Wind Symphony first mainly because of its conductor, Jerry Junkin. After that, the DC military bands. Also, literature performed influences me greatly. If any of the DC bands were lead consistently by a world class conductor would was ALLOWED to program great literature on a constant basis, there is no question the level of music making would be amazing.
