I can only judge from recordings, but I just don't agree with the comment that his sound is too "bass trombonish". I know this is a matter of artistic preference, but to my ear, he has an awesome "tuba" sound. But, the original poster hears it differently, or has a different "ideal" sound in mind. As for my part, Tommy Johnson is so far beyond me, I feel funny even talking about it. But then again, why not. I mean, I also have a few ideas on how Randy Moss can improve his routes...
