Actually, I can agree with you to a point. In the early stages of string playing, the most important factor is good left SIDE postion. Making sure a student has their elbow under far enough, a straight wrist, and correct posture will ensure that their left hand works as smoothly as it needs to. The bow is a very difficult skill to master with it's emphasis on small motor skills, hence females tend to be more facile violinists earlier than their male counterparts. I disagree that one should EVER concentrate on the valve before the air. I have taught enough beginners on all wind instruments to know, you don't finger before you can blow(sorry, a little adage I use to use when little Johnnie's parents griped about them not being able to play in church after two weeks on the instrument.).
