Last night I was fortunate enough to hear two great bands play.
First I saw the Meridian Arts Ensemble play a concert at Merkin Concert Hall.
They were astounding! I have not seen anyone play such cutting edge music with such virtuosity in a quintet concert setting. If you have not heard them, they have about seven albums,go out and buy them immediately! Just hearing what Ray Stewart does in this quintet is worth more than a semester of lessons.
Than I went downtown to a bar on the East Side called Otto's Shrunken Head where my friend Ron Caswell was playing with the Kleztraphobics. What a blast! These guys had the crowd up and dancing to Klezmer music. And this was a Rock and roll kind of crowd. They even had audience members singing some blues vocals and a rapper rapping to some funk backgrounds. If you want to hear someone lay down some serious bass lines, listen to anything Ron does. He's Fierce!
