Probably the ratio is about the same.

However, the market allows for approximately three times as many bassoonists and eight times as many cellists. This one factor alone (ignoring factors of tradition, well established "schools" [styles - time simply being on their side] of playing, technical development and quality of instruments, literature, technical expectations, etc.) increases the likelihood of locating "artist" level players on these instruments. Moreover, this specific piece mentioned is within the body of works written for these instruments.

If I played bass 'bone, I might be tempted to tackle the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto, but I wouldn't spend much energy trying to locate recordings of other bass 'bone players performing it.
