Before delving into his career as a Cubist, Pablo Picasso was a very fine Realist.

Listening to Schoenbergs's "A Night Transfigured" allows us to see that he was a Late Romantic composer of the first rank prior to his experimentations in twelve-tone serialism.

Having a strong respect for our musical past and a love for its trailblazers is a good thing. We build upon our own history with each generation, whether we want to or not. Being plugged-in to all that is hot and new is fine. But the real successful players and writers are also plugged-in to what WAS hot and new (ie - tunes so good that they became standardized and players so distinctive that they became idolized).

Jacobs, Arban, Remington, et al are all heros. Fantastique and Eine Kleine Nacht Musik are standards. I, through intense study, "worship" them all. By your definition I must be a robot.

Funny how that works, huh?
