You dad only knew one usage. A screw and a bolt are practically the same thing in practice, but a screw is just a portion of a bolt. To steel fabricators who earn their keep with this stuff, a screw has a helical thread designed to fasten things, while a bolt is a steel pin with a screw thread at one end. Thus, the threaded rod in a big C-clamp is a screw--it is continuously threaded with an Acme square-section screw thread. A cap bolt has a head on one end, smooth sides, and a short threaded section. A machine screw has the same threads as a bolt, but is continuously threaded. Whether a particular fastener is called a screw or a bolt is a matter of tradition more than anything.
