For another unique voice in a traditional jazz context, check out David "Red" Lehr out of the St. Louis area. Also, I don't recall if the thread has already mentioned Marty Erickson.
Another fine player who is no longer with us was Singleton Palmer, who was also out of St. Louis. Singleton fronted his own band for quite a while in St. Louis, and has at least 6 albums out.
An interesting jazz recording (no longer in print, but occassionaly shows up on Ebay) is "Jockey Jack Boogie" with tuba playing by John "Preacher" Stephens. Also, now available on CD are some recordings by Wilbur de Paris, where Sydney de Paris plays cornet and tuba, with a couple of very nice tuba solos.
