Choices seem obvious to me (though this wasn't the point of my original post).

4/4: new version of King 2341 (four front-action pistons)...a couple hundred under $4000 without case...a bit over $4000 with a hard case

3/4: Weril 680 (four front-action pistons)...slightly over $2000 without case...about $300 additional for a hard case

Both play great, are most-for-the-money instruments in their size ranges, are sturdy, have very few valve problems, and have readily available US-based parts sources.
