Although the bits can play a part in intonation, their primary function is to make the horn universal to fit different 'faces'. I generally make a one piece upper mouthpipe for my personal sousas so the horns will have a nice smooth bore down to the loower mouthpipe. I think the smooth bore mouthpipe makes a sousa easier to center and freer blowing. You can see an example of my Martin 'mammoth' sousa and it's one piece upper mouthpipe on my web site.
