I can think of fewer than 5 times over the past 5 years I've wanted to or actually used an F tuba in concert band. A couple of those times were with military band journal transcriptions, and a couple more with modern pieces (in one of them the composer had no idea what he was doing, in my opinion). I've recently bought myself a Besson 981; if I had the Besson 5 years ago I doubt I would have ever used F tuba in a band setting.

When I think of tubas in concert band the default sound I go for is homogenous, warm, solid, and with a good amount of core. (note the word default- there are always exceptions) I don't think most F tubas are conducive to producing the sound I want to achieve in concert band.
