That double major really might be worth looking into. I know it sounds like a long time to spend, but you're at the best stage in life to do it. It would be hard to keep up the practice time, but sometimes the greater the time pressure, the more effective we become in using what we have. From the engineering standpoint, a music degree might actually help you stand out from the crowd. The people in my university's pre-med program say that medical school applicants with an undergraduate major in music actually have very high acceptance rates, because it shows that you can handle pressure, master several different types of analytical and intuitive thinking, and most of all that you are "about" something beyond just the desire to make money.
