The last time I saw a Mahillon was in 1973. All of the Malillons that I tried were very sturdy, small bore, and a bit stuffy in the low range (I actually like these tubas). For under $1000 (especially if it has four valves) it is probably a good tuba for hobby type use (and if you get very good, a backup tuba is always nice), a good Dixieland tuba (especially if you stand), a good parade tuba and a great "bar tuba" for those gigs at the local tavern.
