A Conn 3J is a good choice for small ensemble, solo, and jazz playing. Also, if your son is somewhat young this would be a good horn because it is compact and easy to hold. The Conn 3J and 2J's were nothing particularly special, many people swear by them for certain purposes. Most Conn's had a pretty consistent run off the assembly line and most tend to have a good response and very good intonation. It would be a good starter horn into CC, and your son could get his money back out of it if he keeps it in good shape and wants to sell it later, or may decide to use it for certain applications as he becomes a more advanced player.
As far as a difference between the 2J &3J I think the 3J has a slightly larger bore and I know it has a larger bell diameter and throat. It tend to play a little darker than the 2J but the difference is not tremendous. But either one are good horn.
