Please don't use ANYTHING coarser than 600, and please know first that there isn't some little dumb thing, like a dented tube or something, that is inhibiting movement.
How does each tube work individually? If each tube floats quickly a freely but not both at the same time, you have an alignment problem.
Please don't be hasty with the sandpaper, and make sure that you can brasso out the sandpaper scratches. (That's why I said, "no coarser than 600".) I am uncomfortable with you taking on this job without any experience.
