I also use straight anhydrous lanolin on my slides but only the ones I don't move much. It is very thick, very slow stuff that lasts forever and makes the slides pull really smoothly but not at all quickly. I've never noticed anything growing in my tuba as a result of the lanolin but then I don't regularly disassemble any of my horns. I use cold cream on the slides I move alot and move quickly but cold cream has to be reapplied pretty regularly to be effective. I think lanolin is best for the others because it lasts so long, on the order of 4 years per application. The stuff is pretty amazing that way!
