Another idea -- why not work up a double? After years of not getting to play Beethoven in my orchestra, I managed to get my bass chops to the point where I could play in the bass section. BTW, Beethoven bass parts can be ungodly hard!
In addition to providing more opportunities for me to play, I think being able to perform Beethoven, Mozart, etc. helps with my overall musicianship.
I'd be interested in hearing from any other doubling types out there.
