Stripping Old Tubas

I have a turn-of-the-century Whaley Royce 3-valve upright Eb that is just about plain ugly looking, but recent repairs have not only greatly improved its overall sound, it also uncovered some beautiful brass beneath all of the oxidation and "gunk" by ways of a buffer. I don't personally own a buffer and was recommended to someone that I use a green pad and some Soft Scrub to clean and strip it a bit. It's worked, but it's also very time consuming. Any suggestions? Would a chemical cleaning help out with this type of work?
