Yes, the "head cold effect" can actually have its advantages... in that you can use it (+ the fact that you are wearing plugs) to provide your own "fold back" for tuning. It helps stop one (me) "trashing" my chops just trying to hear myself, if I'm in the vicinity of something else of a certain type of loud (e.g. drums).

I have seen sax/tpt players actually use plugs purely for the above reason, rather than for hearing protection... and even just tissue paper in their ears!!

Trumpet and sax players (pub rock gigs) sometimes use those "sound ring" type affairs, -- little shields reflecting their the acoustic sound from their bells backwards so they can hear themselves more easily (like facing a wall, for tpt, trom, sax)... Of course these devices do nothing to protect one's hearing!

What is very hard to judge plugged up, (I find) is balance. Although I'm quite deft at slipping a plug out (even while playing) checking that it seems about right in the tutti, and slipping it back in again.
