Yes, I have this problem. My opthamologist told me that it is because, as we age, we need more light than ever to help focus. I found that the lack of light increased performance anxiety. I got an occupatonal lense made that allows me to see at 26." This helped quite a bit. I also learned to make the stand more horizontal, allowing more light to get at the surface I was trying to read. I see the conductor now as a bit of a blur but that is not all bad. I had to make this point to our management one time so I bought a pit lamp ($4.95 at Wal-Mart) and wore it to rehearsal. Insist on light; it really helps.
