I have always had the self-doubt thing, but had supportive people around me telling me that I was trying and that I would make it even if nothing else because of the sheer effort I put into it.
The reason I quit playing the tuba is the quality of teachers and students at the school I'm going to. It was nothing for one to get chewed out at the drop of a hat. If that won't make you hate music, I don't know what will. There are other ways of solving things than that.
