I use a Sony DAT Walkman for portable stuff--it's small and the recording time runs to--uh, about 2 hours? Dunno, I've never recorded to the end of a tape.

OTOH, I can go down to the local drugstore at midnight and find minidiscs on the shelf, but I have to hunt a bit (maybe go to a computer store) to find DAT media.

DAT in the US has suffered badly from attempts to kill it off by the recording industry. Overseas, DAT's pretty much part of any mid to high-end audiophile setup.

Face, it if someone comes out with an inexpensive medium that supports 64-bit sampling at 1 MHz with a jillion dB S/N ratio, the recording industry will try to kill it.
