When playing loud and low parts, equipment well-suited for that purpose helps(I use my big Conn BBb and a huge mouthpiece), but the most important part is you and your brain. I'd suggest that, if you are part of a section, to let others playing an octave above your pedal notes carry a lot of the load, volume-wise, and concentrate more on being in tune than being loud. Like the exquisite presence a string bass can add to an ensemble without being loud, your in-tune, carefully-crafted pedal notes can give the ensemble that "miles-deep" sound
