I don't think tongue-ing lower (i.e. not behind the top of the teeth) is a crime. In analysing (sp?) my own playing, I have found that I do that to some degree. As the range goes lower, the tongue-ing position goes lower. I wonder... does vowel concept in brass playing contribute to this? I suspect it does. Uh - Ah - Eh - Ieh. To me, these sylabbles and all of the variations affect tongue position, oral cavity, position of the back of the tongue, etc. So I guess what I tell my students about brass-playing being really "singing" may be right after all
