I have a Sharp minidisk (cheaper and better than Sony, IMHO) and I think the same AT 822 mike. The mike is stereo and uses a battery.
I have recorded our orchestra by setting up the MD in the back of the hall, hitting the record button, and racing for my seat before the downbeat. AT the same time, there is a guy whith a whole table full of equipment, two mikes suspended up in the air, and a Sony DAT, making a recording.
My minidisk recording sounds every bit as good as his DAT recording.
I use cool edit to put it on CD. My CD's sound every bit as good as his CD's. I have about $650 worth of equipment. I don't know how many zillion dollars worth he has.

Neither of our CD's sounds as good as a commercial CD.
