I've not heard the St. Louis Symphony in person, nor have I been in Powell Hall, but I have heard Mike on many occasions play both that Alex and his Yorkbrunner on the stage of the Lila Cockrell Theatre in San Antonio. That venue is a barn--it seats 3000 or something like that--and served as the main concert hall at Hemisfair. I sat on the back row (literally) of the mezzanine, which I thought were the best seats in the house acoustically.

For the ability to command respect, I give the nod to the Alex. It had a focused core to the sound that was penetrating and undeniable. But the Yorkbrunner had a livelier, sweeter sound, with more warmth. It's a friendlier sound, more apt to evoke smiles rather than salutes. It floats under the ensemble.

The difference was not subtle, but both approaches seem equally valid in the right circumstances.
