Bruce,

I borrowed Duane's Wallace mute and tried it against my silent brass. As was said previously, the silent brass is big and heavy, makes the upper register funky to say the least, and is a pain to have to carry anywhere(and to use). I personally don't like listening to myself through headphones either. The Wallace mute doesn't make the horn play out of tune or mess with the response, it fits ALL THE WAY in the bell so you can carry in the case to a gig or whatever without extra luggage. If you need a practice mute, I'd vote for the Wallace mute. And no, I'm not connected in any way to it by name.(pure coincidence)
I do, however, have a slightly used silent brass for sale.($225 + shipping)

Best of Luck,

Jason Wallace
