Mixing the very different of the 4 valve compensating systems and the 5 valve "alternative fingering" systems is not likely to solve any problems. More likely new problems will be created.
This warning against mixing these systems is in no way intended to expresses derogatives against any of these systems.
That your friend finds the 983 hard to play in the low range is no surprise to me. That was the exact reason why I chose the 981 over the 982, even if it meant a 3 months long wait for delivery.
