Somewhere I remember seeing a story about a much more modern instrument being made like this for a person who was blind in his right eye, and the bell was in the way. Someone re-routed the lead-pipe so the player could see more clearly. It seems to me that there are other advantages to this layout. Vision is improved, and the bell is moved a bit farther from the player's ear.

BTW, from the size listed it looks like this may actually be an alto horn, don't you think? 53 CM, that's about 20 inches. Too short even for a euphonitenorbaritone.
