The bid history doesn't show the proxy bid amounts. If you want to bid on an item... say it's currently $125 and the next bid amount (if increment is $5) should be $130, but you don't want to stay on the computer and monitor all the bids, you can enter a proxy bid. You are willing to bid say $230, so you enter that 230 amount. The software will increase you bid to 130, but there may be other bidders who have also entered proxy bids, so the amount goes up until all the proxies are satisfied.

That bidder that had the high bid of $4000 probably had a proxy set for $5000. Another bidder came in and upped it to whatever. When all the bidding was done (2 or more proxies), it stopped at $4500. Then someone else, or one of the other bidders that got out bid decided the horn was worth more, so he (she) entered another bid, and it went to $5000.

e**y has a discussion on their web site explaining proxy bidding.

Hope this helps.
