I occasionally go back and join the percussion section. I especially like to play bass drom on a Sousa March because most drummers don't understand Gus Helmecke's style of
accenting beat 2 which produced the famous "Sousa Swing".
Twent-one years ago I was in the Denver COncert Band which had three or four other good tubists and only one good drummer. Our drum section consisted of him, me, and a clarinetist. I got to the point that I could even do tympani once they were tuned properly. We had a blast; I was sorry to leave Denver and come to Montana, but I do get to indulge a few times a year.
