I can play it, but any good trombonist can pick up a euphonium and play it better. I heard a highly-respected tubist in Boston use it to demonstrate his "doubling" mouthpiece on a euphonium; he played it beautifully. Then on the same day I attended a euph. workshop, and asked the performer to play it for us. Although he had not planned to play it that day or that month, and did not have the chart with him, he played it better.
The New Haven symphony did it once years ago, and the first trombonist asked me very politely if he could play the solo. I let him talk me into it. After the concert several string players came to me and told me how beautifully I had played it.
On the radio I heard some orchestra doing Pictures, and the first four bars of the solo was played on a large tuba, with a euphonium coming in for the next four, where the real high notes are. THAT was a weird compromise.
