As a high school band director, I agree with these comments.
Mr. Sloan has nailed my comments with almost complete accuracy. The comment that holds the most accuracy is the one about the band director possibly being able to get more for the money.
The instruments listed in the thread are all good instruments. Each have their own strong points, and weaknesses. The defining factor may come down to the best deal a band director can cut on the instrument. reading your proposed range, an enterprising director could get the tuba, plus another large ticket item, or smaller items that will benefit the band.
Hope you find the advice you are seeking, and help your program. I would be happy with the suprise that the band parents had the money and wanted to spend it for the program.
