Price has a lot to do with competition in the same price bracket. You say you paid $6500 in 1996. What other CC tubas were available for that price at that time, including used instruments? $6500 could have bought most any used CC, a new Meinl Weston, or any number of others. If the Kalison was the best choice for you and your music making, then it was a good buy. As a financial investment, it was a risk.

I am pretty sure you could get more than $3500 if you are very patient, but it will be difficult. There are not too many "students/hopeful pros" who will take interest in that particular brand compared to some other choices, and they are typically the ones shelling out the bucks for the $6000+ instruments. The "amateur/hobbyists" might be more content with a $3000 used Miraphone and a $3000 big screen TV, then with a $6000 used Kalison.
