Back then the French French horns were narrow bore 3p +1r narrow bore Bb/F compensating instruments played with a wide vibrato and a lighter sound.

As far As I remember the trumpets are in C in the score. And the parts hardly were played on piccolo instruments then. The modern piccolo valved trumpet is mostly a post WWII phenomenon.
