This has to do with the octave the fundamental of these horns is set in, which is the contra octave. Now, I could very well be wrong, but it seems to me that a BBb tuba is the only one that should be named this way...if a "CC" tuba is tuned 1 whole step higher than a BBb tuba, wouldn't that make it tuned to "C", in the "great" octave, and not the "CC" of the contra octave? The same would apply to both the Eb and F tubas. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the impression I got from my theory text book from last year.
