My guess would be , Mr.Northcut was trying to get you to toungue more gently,you see,the lip will respond anyway when you blast enough air through it , but it might not be beautiful.
It really doesn't have to be Tah, when your embouchure is formed exactly where the note should be , even "Zu" will responde well.Tah is the most standard way to start a note,but a little experience with different kinds of tounging won't hurt.
