A cool thing to tell him is to drop his tounge, aim his air down the stem of the mouthpiece. Have him Sing, Buzz(at pitch), and play everything. Tone and center of sound will improve everything.
A cool buzzing excercise is to buzz a(lets say) c. buzz that c 4 times the same way. then buzz a c# 4 times and so on to the top of his range.
A great range excercise is to play a chromatic scale starting at middle c and when you reach the high end, play CBCBCBC and start going back down.
