The trick would be having a Teflon coating that had a uniform-enough surface to be reasonably air-tight, so the horn would have sufficient compression. As I see it, the most feasible scenario would be to have a steel valve casing with a Silverstone coating inside, and plastic pistons of the same material that spatulas are made of. If immaculately maintained, such a system might work. I have worked on a custom German french horn with traditional rotor casings and black plastic rotors that works well, but I'd be concerned about the longevity of such an arrangement. I hope to experiment with various arrangements in the coming years. Who knows? Maybe we'll come up with something better.
