I had the same experience with propanolol, or beta blockers. They are a heart-regulating medicine (I think) in much higher doses, like 200mg or 400mg. In 10mg-40mg, they can be used for performance anxiety. I used 10mg about three times, and after that I didn't need it. What they do is lessen the physical adrenaline reaction to anxiety, while not really changing the way you feel emotionally. You learn that you "can" do it even if you're nervous. They also made it a little more difficult for me to concentrate, but I still played better than I would have without them. And now I don't need them at all.
