Three thoughts:

1. My starting place would be the cruddiest pawn-shop trombone you can find with a decent bell. Slide tubing could be used for most of the straight tubing, and copper tubing would be easier to work with for cylindrical bows. It's also a good bit cheaper while you're learning from your mistakes.

2. An instrument in Bb is approximately 9 ft. long, so an instrument in the shape shown would only be about 3 feet long.

3. You'll want as much of the weight as possible as close to your body as possible. Ask one of your physics-geek friends what a lever-arm is. Then make a much smaller *DOUBLE* coil, perhaps a foot long and 5 inches high, and get the bell out no more than four feet in front.
