I've played the Rite on two different occasion, both times with aggregate free-lance ballet orchestras (what the general public and ballet critics call "pick-up" orchestras.
These were good professional orchestras, not great in the "top-five" sense but fully competent, with some truly great players on some chairs. One of the conductors was totally awesome, the other was no more than a good journeyman. The differences - the awesome guy got electrifying performances, the other guy got perfectly adequate but unexceptional ones. Neither was a struggle. That's why I believe that Rite of Spring is standard repertoire that has been mastered not only by the great, but by the rank and file, players as well as conductors.
