The best way to learn is to play. Play along with a recording, or even better, with a live group. The first time you play live is always the scariest, and no amount of book-learning will change that. Get in there and start swinging. Listen to the players around you (or the recording) as you play, you will be learning the music and training your ear at the same time. Your job is being a foundation, for the tempo AND the chords. Keep it simple, don't try to impress anyone in the group, just try to keep a solid groove. Most of all, have fun!
