As being just recently a middle school tubist, I agree with you.
It's so frustrating it is to be told to "blow across the room" or "make the room echo" or even to "play with faster air but not louder". Sure, I understand those concepts now, but as a 7th grader, it just made me really hate lessons because that's all they would say.
They also would say I had a wonderful tone, then say I had a strange way of playing because the mouthpiece "wasn't touching my nose". For two years different brass and trombone teachers tried to make me do that for no apparent reason and all it did was waste my thirty minutes of lesson time.

I'm currently using Best of Class to teach myself flute and that's also what I initially used to learn tuba. They work pretty good.
