I believe the recording studio to be the worst possible way to represent a musicians intent, hence, I search out every live recording I can possibly find. There are exceptions. The Leningrad Phil recordings of the Tcaik 4-6 from 1960 is great. The playing sparkles and the trumpet playing is, in a word, stupefying. I like alot of Von Karajan's BPO recordings(although DG can homogenized homogenized milk). BUT, there is nothing like a live recording, particularly ones done when that was the norm, that captures the true essence of what it's like to play, day in and day out, a brass instrument. I thank you for the thought provoking commentaries.
