A few years ago Barry Douglas recorded the original version for piano on the RCA label, and I must say I enjoy it more than many recordings, even some of the orchestral. My favorite of all is the orchestral recording of the Ravel arrangement that the St Louis Symphony made in the 80's, I think Leonard Slatkin conducted. I am pretty sure Gene Pokorny played tuba on it, and his sound is killer. The overall performance is better, IMHO, than the 1980(or 1981?) CSO recording under Solti.
